'A' Mountain
Retreat

ResidentialMountain

A high-altitude getaway rooted in the landscape. Raw timber, stone, and glass work with the terrain rather than against it. The envelope responds to solar gain; passive strategies reduce mechanical load year-round.

The section is carved into the hillside — reducing the building's visual mass while anchoring it to the site. South-facing glazing frames a specific mountain view; all other windows are pulled back to control light and maintain insulation.

Glass Farm

ResidentialAgricultural

A modern farmhouse on working land. Steel and glass inserted into an agrarian vocabulary — honest materials, barn scale, generous light. The roofline echoes the surrounding outbuildings while the plan is strictly contemporary.

Stan's own property in Weld County informed this commission: site relationships, seasonal light, and the practical reality of working land are baked into the section and the material choices.

Blue Farm

ResidentialAgricultural

A second residence on the same property as Glass Farm, designed for extended family. Shared material palette, independent program. The two structures read as a compound from the road — related but not identical.

The smaller footprint required a tighter section: lofted sleeping area over a single open living volume, with a covered breezeway connecting to the main structure.

Belmont Ridge

ResidentialSingle-family

A single-family residence on a ridge lot in Fort Collins. The section steps with the slope to preserve views and minimize cut. Open plan main level, private lower wing. The street elevation is deliberately reserved — the view side opens completely.

Lot constraints required a careful study of setbacks and height limits. The stepping section solves the grade while keeping the upper floor below the ridge line.

Breckenridge
Cabin

ResidentialMountain

A ski-season cabin with a compact footprint and a focus on gathering. Heavy timber frame, standing seam roof, south-facing deck. The program is tight — every square foot earns its place.

Snow load and thermal performance drove the structural and envelope decisions. The roofline sheds accumulation away from entries; the south deck doubles as passive snowmelt surface.

Stan Arnett,
architect.

Stan was born and raised in Colorado — developing an early and lasting relationship with the mountains, high plains, and built landscape of the Front Range. He began studying architecture formally in middle school and continued through a Bachelor of Environmental Design and then a Master of Architecture, both from the University of Colorado. A summer semester in Rome studying European building traditions — Roman civic space, medieval urban grain, Renaissance proportion — shaped how he reads site and scale.

Fort Collins has been home since 2005. Stan and his wife Amanda are raising three kids on his great-grandfather's farm — a piece of land Stan still works in off-hours alongside biking, hiking, and fishing in the mountains. He holds a certificate in design/build and a Green Building Certificate.

Before founding Arnett Design Studio in January 2010, Stan spent nearly a decade at r4 Architects doing full-service architecture across commercial, residential, and healthcare project types in Northern Colorado. The studio is independent, incorporated in Colorado, and operates out of Fort Collins.
